Titanium Pipe Fittings Overview
Titanium fittings are used to connect titanium piping systems and maintain structural and chemical integrity under harsh conditions. They come in:
- Seamless (from bar/forgings)
- Welded (from pipe or plate)
Titanium Pipe Fitting Sizes
| Category | Size Range |
| Nominal Sizes | 1/8″ to 24″ NPS |
| Wall Thickness | Sch 5S to Sch 160 (same as pipe) |
| Metric Sizes | 6 mm to 610 mm OD available |
Most fittings follow ASME B16.9 and B16.11 dimensions.
Types of Titanium Pipe Fittings
| Type | Description |
| Elbow (45°, 90°, 180°) | Changes direction of flow |
| Tee (Equal/Reducing) | Splits or combines flow |
| Reducer (Concentric/Eccentric) | Connects different pipe sizes |
| Cap | Ends a piping system |
| Stub End | Used in lap joint flanges |
| Coupling | Joins two pipes |
| Union | Easily disconnectable joint |
| Nipple | Short piece of pipe with male threads |
Titanium Grades Used in Pipe Fittings
Commercially Pure (Grades 1–4)
| Grade | Features | Applications |
| 1 | Soft, highest corrosion resistance | Marine, chemical lines |
| 2 | Most commonly used CP grade | General industrial, seawater piping |
| 3 | Higher strength | Pressure piping |
| 4 | Strongest CP, lower formability | Aggressive chemical handling |
Alloy Grades
| Grade | Composition | Features | Applications |
| 5 | Ti-6Al-4V | High strength, moderate corrosion resistance | Aerospace and high-pressure fittings |
| 7 | Ti-0.2Pd | Extreme corrosion resistance (acidic) | Chemical and nuclear |
| 9 | Ti-3Al-2.5V | Weldable and formable | Aircraft hydraulic systems |
| 12 | Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni | Resistant to chloride and acidic media | Desalination and paper plants |
| 23 | Ti-6Al-4V ELI | Biocompatible, low interstitials | Medical gas systems, surgical |
Standards and Specifications
| Standard | Description |
| ASTM B363 | Titanium and Titanium Alloy Fittings (welded/seamless) |
| ASME B16.9 | Factory-made wrought butt-welded fittings |
| ASME B16.11 | Forged fittings, socket weld and threaded |
| MSS–SP–43 | Lightweight corrosion-resistant fittings (butt-welded) |
Mechanical Properties by Grade (Summary)
| Grade | Yield Strength (MPa) | UTS (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Corrosion Resistance |
| 1 | ~170 | ~240 | 24–30% | Excellent |
| 2 | ~275 | ~345 | 20–30% | Excellent |
| 5 | ~880 | ~950 | 10–14% | Good |
| 7 | ~275 | ~345 | 20–30% | Outstanding (acids) |
| 12 | ~480 | ~560 | 18–25% | Outstanding (chlorides) |
Applications of Titanium Fittings
| Industry | Uses |
| Chemical | Piping systems for HCl, sulfuric, nitric acid |
| Desalination | Seawater pipes and cooling lines |
| Medical | Oxygen/gas pipelines, surgical water lines |
| Aerospace | High-pressure fluid systems |
| Marine | Ballast, exhaust, cooling pipe networks |
| Oil & Gas | Offshore and sour service pipe systems |
